Much like many of the traditional towns in Mallorca, Canyamel has a rich history which only adds to its charms. It has one of the oldest and best preserved defence towers, the Torre de Canyamel. The name which the town has been given also has an interesting story, during the 18th century the town was an important producer of sugar cane, giving it its sweet name Canyamel, which derives from the Latin meaning sugar cane or honey.
